Born out of the desire to offer a sustainable alternative to the fleeting nature of fresh blooms, The Paper Primrose specialises in the creation of life-like floral arrangements crafted from crepe paper.

3 Day Abstract Art Course with Jane Thompson February 24, 25, 26th - 9.30am til 3.30pm

Jane Thompson returns to Green Door after a sell out 3 day course in Nov 23.

Jane Thompson was born and raised in the country on a sheep and cattle property in the Southern Tablelands of NSW, Australia. She now lives in Brisbane with 2 fast growing children, one husband and one mischievous beagle. She is represented by several galleries in Australia and has participated in many group and solo exhibitions. She is also represented in Italy where her works recently featured in the (un)fair Art Fair Milan and is looking forward to her upcoming artist residency in Tuscany later this August.

Working predominantly in acrylics, oil sticks and graphite, Jane enjoys creating with fast drying materials as they enable her to capture the energy and freedom in the spontaneous moment. Her approach is spirited and free with a deliberate use of contrast and expressive gestural marks.

In this course you can expect to discover and learn about the elements that create a successful abstract painting. You will be guided through a series of techniques that explore the application of colour, value, shape, space, line and texture. You will create several study pieces and up to three completed canvas paintings using acrylics, oil sticks, graphite and collage. The overall goal is to paint freely, open up and create individually with courage. While some experience is beneficial, the course is suitable for the beginner through to the practising artist.

Supplied:  3 x canvases each (approx. 66cm x 66cm) and A2 acrylic paper.

Please bring your own supplies of the following:

Acrylic paints, a variety of brushes for small to medium-large paintings, graphite, oil sticks (1-2 colours or more!) and/or wax pastels, black liquid gel ink pen, glazing medium (for creating thin layers) and matte gel (for collage), A3 painting pad (210gsm or more), A4 or A5 sketch book and pencils and rubber for sketching. Also required are paint rags, painting apron, mixing palette (foil baking tray or plastic picnic plates are fine) and water dishes.

Need accommodation in the area please take a look at our recommended list on this website. There are so many quality options in Robertson and surrounds.

This will be an incredible experience to paint with Jane – a reminder that Jane will meet you at your experience level be it beginner through to intermediate.

Lunch and morning tea will be supplied each day.

We will arrange a table for dinner at the local pub on the middle evening for those that wish to socialise.

SOLD OUT - 5 day Floral Paint & Stitch Workshop with Fleur Woods - 3rd to 7th March 2025

NOW SOLD OUT

Join NZ based Contemporary Fibre Artist Fleur Woods for 5 days of floral embroidery bliss at Green Door Studios, March 2025.

This inspiring workshop will give you the opportunity to play with a variety of techniques including painting your own linen, designing imagery (no drawing skills required) and stitching to represent the blooms you love. We will work together to use paint and contemporary stitch techniques to explore florals fully.

Experience: ideally, you will know how to thread a needle and perhaps a few simple stitches, or you may be very experienced and looking to explore a new style. My workshops are designed to suit all experience levels as I keep our group small allowing for plenty of one on one time to help you meet your creative goals.

More about Fleur's teaching philosophy and the week’s workshop…

My goal is to meet you where you are at as an individual creative and support you to grow gently but surely towards joyful mark making using my favourite techniques.

I facilitate a safe and welcoming environment for anyone joining my workshops, my teaching style is warm and relaxed. My intuition for the process and working with fellow creative souls is strong. I aim to adjust my approach for individuals as well as each group to ensure that no matter your learning style or experience level you feel embraced and supported to fully explore your creative potential.

I'll openly share my process of hand painting linen, designing your unique artwork inspired by flora and stitching using contemporary embroidery practices.

During the five days we will cover off all of the key elements of my process so you have the practical skills to create with joy but also bring those skills together into either a small finished stitched artwork or a larger ongoing project (your choice depending on what size you'd like to work with).

Generous supplies are offered that you are gifted to take home with you to continue creating whenever you like using all of my favourite tools from beautiful hand dyed wools, specially selected vintage textiles and so much more.

Stitching is a slow practice so we will embrace that pace and while we're in slow down mode there will also be lazy lunches, time for a wander and a quiet cuppa and chats with your fellow work-shoppers or for those who are just obsessed there's the option to create and eat and deep dive.

It's your time to do as you please with generous knowledge sharing and support.

P.S. Here’s what some recent work-shopper’s said…

"Fleur has such a gentle & encouraging manner and is so very generous in sharing her skills and materials.  I went away from that first course so very inspired and have been on a stitch journey ever since.  I have gone on and completed a few more courses with Fleur and have loved every single one.  Each one I come away with a bit more knowledge and confidence in my ability as a stitcher.  I have made some things that no longer get stuffed in the cupboard unfinished but are displayed proudly in my home.  I now feel cheated if I have a day without stitching – it's a great calmer at the end of a busy day." - Michelle B

“I love Fleur, her work, and her workshops! I’ve been to 3 workshops so far,  and I learn something new each time and leave feeling inspired and invigorated” - Jacinda R

Here’s a bit more about me incase you’d like to share this experience with a friend who doesn’t know my work…

Fleur Woods is a Contemporary Embroidery artist based in rural South Island, Aotearoa New Zealand.  Fleur's intricate, joyful stitched paintings are coveted and collected around the world. Featured in many, many magazines and exhibited from her local gallery in rural NZ to the Lower East side NY. Whilst prioritising studio practice Fleur also adores teaching and selects beautiful locations to teach her sought after workshops in both New Zealand and Australia. As a largely self taught artist Fleur's processes are unique, free and playful. She embraces colour and texture and prioritises joy in the process.

Inspired by nature, country gardens, wild flowers, native bush and all things flora Fleur brings her passion for the outdoors into the classroom encouraging students to take time to notice the beautiful details in nature and bring this into their work. A natural collaborator Fleur's approach to teaching is one of working in small groups to enable participants to follow their individual creative goals, so while the workshop will have themes and technical elements that are offered for group learning there is plenty of one on one support available to meet you where you are at and help you progress to the next level.

As mentioned above all materials are supplied and in abundance. Morning tea and lunch are provided each day and there will be optional activities arranged for the group to take part in, eg walks/dinners - details closer to the event.

SOLD OUT - Floral Stitched Textile Collage with Fleur Woods - 3 DAYS - 10 to 12 March 2025

  • Google Calendar ICS

My goal is to meet you where you are at as an individual creative and support you to grow gently but surely towards joyful mark making using my favourite techniques.

I'll share my process of selecting, designing and stitching your own contemporary textile collage. We’ll be inspired by florals, vintage fabrics, beautiful colours & textures.

All materials are carefully selected and supplied with plenty for you to take home as well.

During the three full days we will cover off all of the key elements of my process so you have the practical skills to create with joy but also bring those skills together into either a small finished stitched artwork or a larger ongoing project (your choice depending on what size you'd like to work with).

Experience is not essential for this workshop however a basic understanding of how to thread a needle and make simple stitches will get you off to an easier start. If you're a practising creative or someone who stitches regularly this workshop offers a great opportunity to try new ways of working and 'free-up' your approach as my style encourages you to learn more about what sparks joy for you and follow those things to identify your own individual style.

Spaces are limited, book early to avoid disappointment.

All materials, morning tea and lunch are provided each day.

Hand Embroidered Quilt Retreat with Kasia Jacquot 12/13/14th November

  • Google Calendar ICS

Hand Embroidered Quilt Retreat

An incredible three days with Polish Folk Embroidery Artist Kasia Jacquot. Immerse yourself into three days of hand embroidering a quilt. Kasia has created a process where stitching a quilt becomes doable for any skill level.

You will select from three designs (pictured) and Kasia will guide you every step of the way over the course of the three days.

The retreat has been carefully planned to allow plenty of time and a balance of relaxed stitching combined with relevant lessons where you’ll learn new skills and improve on your existing knowledge.

As a bonus Kasia is also including two one-hour Master Lessons;

  1. Choosing Colours For Embroidery

  2. Mastering The Satin Stitch

Over the three days you will learn how to:

  • comfortably approach a large-scale embroidery project like a quilt.

  • use a hoop for a large project, or stitch without one effectively.

  • choose the best stitches for your design.

  • choose colours for your design.

  • design a stitch plan for your quilt, instead of making it up as you go along.

  • stitch your quilt so it’s best suited to your skill level, amount of time you have and desired effect.and more

You will be able to see a variety of different embroidered quilts on display and Kasia will also showcase previous students work so you’ll get plenty of inspiration and ideas for your own quilt.

Project details:

  • If you already have one of Kasia’s quilts you can bring this to the retreat and work on it for the three days.

  • If you don’t have one of Kasia’s quilts already you will be able to choose from three designs at the start of the retreat and purchase your quilt panel for the special retreat price of $99. In addition, you will also have the option of purchasing the DMC embroidery threads in Kasia’s signature colours at any point during the three days.

  • You are welcome to bring your own threads and use your own colours.

  • The quilt tops feature twenty square designs which you can stitch all as one piece or you can cut them up and stitch them one at a time. Previous students have cut up the squares and added sashing in between to make the quilts bigger, and others have left the whole panel as is and turned it into a small quilt.

  • Following the retreat students will be given access to Kasia’s closed Facebook group where you will find over three hundred other embroiders and quilters working on the same quilts.

  • This retreat focuses on embroidering a quilt panel. We will not be sewing the quilt but you are welcome to bring fabrics and Kasia will talk you through your design with choices for sashing, backing, edges and binding.

 What to bring:

  • Small scissors

  • Pen

  • Notebook

If you have any specific questions Kasia is happy to answer them all, you can email her directly at hello@kasiajacquot.com

Also - for those wishing to partake - we have arranged some late night shopping at the Coolroom Emprorium in Robertson from 4.15pm on the Wednesday. The Coolroom is home to 50 independent vintage and collectable stalls. After shopping, again for those that fancy it, we will enjoy a group dinner at the local pub. Everyone can purchase their own dinner and drinks and we can enjoy some social time together.

Kawandi with Lorena Uriarte 24th August 10am til 4pm

Kawandi are traditional utility quilts made by the Siddi diaspora in India, who originated from East Africa.

Each quilt has a beautiful texture. Traditionally, they are made from clothing and textile scraps, patched and stitched together from the outside to the centre of a foundation piece.

This is a technique class where students will learn the art of Kawandi hand-stitching and the quilt-as-you-go method. This means that you will piece and quilt your sampler at the same time. Once the last piece is stitched down, your quilt is finished! No additional quilting or binding is required!

The Kawandi process of piecing and hand stitching is mindful and relaxing. Choosing each new fabric addition, whether a solid or print, then stitching it in place, is meditative and creative.

The expected outcome of the class is that students will complete a Kawandi sampler piece, of roughly 45cm square. This quilt may be used as a decorative item or turned into a handy pouch, cushion cover or tote.

A complete kit is provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own small scissors and a thimble if they use one.

About the artist..

Lorena Uriarte is an award-winning, modern maker who values the pragmatic nature and enduring beauty of bed quilts.

She mostly creates larger pieces with the intention of them being used daily to bring warmth and joy to a space. Sometimes her quilts turn into coats due to storage constraints.

Her work sits at the traditional end of the modern aesthetic, sliding up and down that scale depending on the audience. Her quilts have been exhibited in Australia and internationally.

Lorena loves to use hand and machine techniques with a bold use of colour, in both commercial prints and plain fabrics. She aims to create engaging quilts with a lot of movement.

Lorena is passionate about teaching patchwork and encourages others to live a fulfilled and creative life to cope with the stresses of modern life. She has taught all around Australia as well as overseas in Canada, USA, New Zealand, England and Scotland.

Lorena was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina before moving to Sydney, Australia

The SOLD OUT - Paper Primrose Flower Making Workshop with Trixie Primrose 19th August 10 til 2pm

This one is Sold Out consider Trixies next workshop on 13th October

About

Trixie Primrose is the creator of The Paper Primrose, based on the Lands of the Dharwal People.

Trixie’s vision began with a childhood spent at the family florist and many afternoons embracing the art around her through an array of mediums, and then onto further study. Her love of artistic endeavours followed her into motherhood, where nurturing her creativity has given her an understanding of the importance of self-care and finding time for your passions, and sharing these passions, amidst our busy lives.

The Paper Primrose was born out of the desire to offer a sustainable alternative to the fleeting nature of fresh blooms through lasting keepsakes, and to provide a nurturing environment for everyone on their creative journey with immersive and curated workshops.

Crochet Bag and Fabric Gems Necklace Workshops with Pauline Franklyn 6th August 10 til 4pm

Crochet Bag in the Morning…

I love making use of something I already have, whether it’s fabric, yarn or garments. Making something useful and beautiful is my goal and this Crochet Bag is perfect.

In this workshop I will get you started on your crochet bag. Once you get the basics, there is a lot of room for your own individual designs, shape and size. I will provide a variety of fabric that you can begin with and then you can continue to grow your bag from your own stash. I will give you ideas for sourcing and up-cycling if needed.

I will share my knowledge for completing a really beautiful and unique bag that you will love to use.

The crochet stitch is simple but using fabric can be tricky so basic crochet skills are required.

If you would like to bring along some of your own fabric you are very welcome, but it is optional.

Workshop Includes

  • Crochet Hook

  • Instructions for completing your bag

  • Fabric to use at the workshop

And in the Afternoon…..

Fabric Gems Necklace

We all have little bits of fabric that we love and wonder what to do with them. They can be sentimental, or you love the colour or it’s a favourite garment that you don’t wear anymore.

Learn how to make little fabric gems, hand stitched and embroidered and construct into a necklace you will love.

I will provide inspiration, lots of fabrics, threads, beads, buttons and tips so you can make a beautiful necklace. If you would like to bring along some of your own  fabric that is wonderful too but certainly not essential.

  • an assortment of fabrics to use at the workshop

  • needle and threads

  • beads and buttons

$330aud includes all materials and lunch and refreshments

Fabric, Flowers & Stitch Workshop with Pauline Franklyn 5th August 10 til 4pm

Fabric, Flowers & Stitch Workshop

I never tire of beautiful flowers and I am excited to share this workshop with you.
Using a combination of simple stitches and floral fabrics learn how to form  flowers and leaves to create a lovely art piece. These techniques can be used to embellish garments and other stitched work too.

Sit down, take in the colours, peruse the yarns, fabrics and samples and enjoy a day stitching, including French knots, mosaic weaving, detached chain stitch, Pistil stitch and Turkey work.

If you are an experienced stitcher and are contemplating this workshop, let me tell you a little more.

Experience the joy of stitching without a plan or pattern and a full palette of hand dyed wool yarns. Bliss!

Hand dyed yarns are so beautiful to stitch with, they are very forgiving and also provide inspiration for further colour choices in your piece. Every stitch can be a surprise as colours appear and your flowers take shape. It feels a little like magic!

Many of the more experienced stitchers who have come to my workshop can’t believe how uninhibited it is to stitch with these beautiful yarns and although they know the actual stitches, combining them in different ways is very fulfilling and they often come up with the most amazing combinations.

Enjoy the pleasure and freedom of stitching while working with quality materials and the deep experience of colour and ease of wool yarn. Use beautiful floral fabric flowers to add another design element to your work.

I will provide an assortment of beautiful hand dyed yarn and floral fabrics at the workshop with enough to take home so you can finish your piece.

Please bring along your own sharp scissors and any floral fabric scraps you might like to use.

I will have scissors and floral fabrics too so don’t stress if you don’t have these things.

  • 20cm x 20cm heavy weight linen square

  • 16cm bamboo hoop

  • Needle

  • Assorted hand dyed wool yarns and thread

  • Floral fabrics galore

$330aud includes all materials and lunch and refreshments

Hand dyed yarns are so beautiful to stitch with, they are very forgiving and also provide inspiration for further colour choices in your piece. Every stitch can be a surprise as colours appear and your squares take shape. It feels a little like magic!
