A one-day workshop with Taria Dawson, author of “The Beginners Guide to Urban Sketching”, Youtuber (Taria’s Sketchy Adventures) & Blogger (urbansketchingworld.com)
This workshop will show you how to produce small yet expressive sketches to capture the magic of your travels, whether an exotic trip far afield or your local surroundings.
In this one-day workshop, we will take inspiration from a recent visit I took to Edinburgh, Scotland.
I will show you how you can capture:
- Quick simple landscapes through a window, including my little cheats for painting skies and foliage you can use every time!
- Shiny surfaces such as glossy cups of coee and metal cutlery
- Some hand lettering to elevate your sketchbook spread
- Loose expressive architecture

- Develop quick and eective sketching skills.
- Gain confidence in sketching on the go.
Who is this workshop for?
Beginners to intermediate artists, travellers, and anyone interested in enhancing their ink & watercolour sketching skills.
Using all of these secrets I have learned from over 10 years of sketching across the world I will show you how you can sketch your adventures quickly yet beautifully in ink and watercolour.

Remember: even if you don’t travel far you can still capture the magic of your immediate surroundings, whether it's the local park, cafe or town square - there’s always something to sketch. And everything you sketch tells a story.
Materials & Resources
Materials provided include watercolour paper, a watercolour set, watercolour brushes and handouts.
Participants are encouraged to bring their personal sketching kits (if you have one). At the minimum please bring a pencil, eraser and pen with waterproof ink such as a fineliner.
Your Instructor
Taria Dawson, originally from the UK, now calls Johannesburg home after several years of travel. In March 2020, she launched the popular blog Urban Sketching World, followed shortly by her YouTube channel, Taria’s Sketchy Adventures. Through these platforms, she has inspired and guided hundreds of students in capturing the world around them through sketching. As an administrator for the Urban Sketchers Johannesburg chapter, Taria helps to organise monthly meetups around the city. She also conducts online courses and workshops, along with in-person sessions globally, sharing her passion for urban and travel sketching with a diverse audience.
Most recently, Taria has published an instructional book called “The Beginners Guide to Urban Sketching”. The book is available in major bookstores in English-speaking countries and online retailers.
