Stitch a Grey Hare - Sewing machine art with Kathryn Harmer Fox 4th September 9am to 5pm

Join internationally renowned textile artist Kathryn Harmer Fox who will be visiting from South Africa.

This is geared to be an intensive 1-day workshop. I shall teach most of the techniques that I use in my own artworks using the above image of a hare as the project.

 

Tools, equipment and materials needed

Domestic sewing machine (must be able to disenguage the feed-dogs)

Extension table (at least A4 size)

Darning/embroidery foot + universal foot

Jeans/denim needles

Extra bobbins

Usual sewing paraphernalia – sharp scissors, pins, tape-measure, sewing oil, etc

Snippets and scraps of fabric relating to the colours in the above images (including tulle/netting and other see-through fabrics) in as many tones as you can make out: light and dark greys, blues, blacks,  lilacs, rusts, browns, etc There will be a general supply to take from too but please bring any bits you want to include.

Used and dried tea bags could also work wonderfully on this piece

Sewing threads (not embroidery thread) similar in colouration to the chosen fabrics and fibre (see photo which features a selection of thread colours) Again there will be some available to use in the studio

Materials provided

A colour print of the Hare

1 x 50 x 50cm piece of canvas

Tracing paper

1 x black, fibre-tipped, fine-liner pen (with which to do the tracing)

 Fabric and threads (see above - bring some if you have similar colours)

Techniques learnt

How to transfer an image to your canvas

Fibre embedment using scribble stitch

Free motion machine embroidery

 

Processes learnt

How to audition and use the snippets and scraps of fabric and fibre.

What are the uses of see-through fabrics like tulle, fine silk, organza etc?

What type of stitching to use for colouring-in and drawing?

How to critique your own work.

 

If there is enough time we shall also have a look at different ways to finish the work – paint or stitch the background? What type of backing to use and the different options available for the edging etc.

 

This workshop covers A LOT in one day. We encourage you to arrive anytime from 8.30am to set up your sewing machines so we can begin at 9am prompt.

 

 Lunch and Morning/afternoon tea will be provided to keep you sustained throughout this mammoth day.
